Title: Spiced Stewed Apples
Categories: Desserts, Apples
Yield: 2 Servings
2 Sweet apples
- (Golden Delicious or Gala)
4 Dried prunes; pitted
2 Dried Turkish calamara figs
6 Whole cloves
1 Cinnamon stick (1")
3 Green cardamom pods
Total time: 25 minutes
Quarter apples and cut out the cores. Add to a pot skin side down,
with spices and dried fruit. Add 1 cup water, bring to a boil, cover.
Cook on low for 15 to 20 minutes or until apples are tender. Serve
with skins on and add remaining liquid.
Tips:
Stewed apples are especially delicious as an easy breakfast recipe,
from fall through late spring, paired with oatmeal, oatmeal muffins,
toast with nut-butter, anything--or nothing at all.
Pears work equally well in this stewed fruit recipe, and we always add
dried fruit, like prunes, figs or apricots, for extra sweetness and
flavor. The combination is scrumptious, and of course, promotes
regularity!
Tips:
Use a sweet apple, like Golden Delicious or Gala, or a sweet crisp
pear like Bosc or Anjou. Cloves are essential, but don't worry if you
don't have or can't find cinnamon stick or cardamom pods.
