I'm running WFWG3.11 on Qemu under DOS 4.0, and trying to get networking working
using TCP-IP-32, and have tried ne2000 and rtl8139 drivers in Windows network setup.

Has anyone been able to get networking working? What was your setup/config?

Welp! It took a LOT of work! Like HOURS! I'm using an ne2k_isa line on Qemu, with
packet driver and Trumpet Winsock.

Next up, Netscape, and a good telnet client.

I'd love to hear, too. I have a soft spot for WfWG and have a VM
running in Proxmox (basically qemu under the hood). I could never get
networking to work.

Back in the day, I had a customer service team that set up chat, their
own email server, used one desktop as a file and print server - it was
very impressive.

I couldn't get anything but an old DOS ne2000 packet driver working with Trumpet
Winsock. I'm planning on trying to set this up on an old laptop next and see where that goes. And if that doesn't work... I know a guy selling a very old laptop with Windows 98 on it.

I'm wondering if it's just Qemu issue? Have you also tried Bochs or another emulator? I'm happy with my setup now, so I probably won't go further, but it might be worth trying..

I never did use Geoworks. I'd first heard about it around 1996 or 1997.. I thought it was interesting to hear about GUI environments that were alternatives to Windows, since Windows became so dominant in the industry.

Also, I had used DESQview (included with QEMM) for a while for DOS multi-tasking with my BBS, but I only recently learned there was a DESQView-X which included a GUI environment.

I had a good time running Geoworks. I had an old 386SX that could sort
of run Windows 3.1. Geoworks ran nicely on it. I scavenged an old Apple
Laserwriter - nice printer, but it only had a serial port I could use.
Postscript at 9600 baud isn't fast.

But, Geoworks had nice graphics and printer support, I could print
flyers, clip art, and nice wysiwyg documents. It didn't have a
spreadsheet, but the version I came was bundled with Borland Quattro
Pro. (get it? 1-2-3, Quattro?)

I was a Novell guy at work, had a copy of Novell DOS. It came with a
task switcher that Geoworks could use, so you could flip back and forth
between DOS tasks and Geoworks.

I do need to try again. I have VirtualBox on my desktop, could try
that. Rumor has it that Windows for Workgroups will run in DOSBOX-X,
but haven't tried that yet.

boot up, share your home directory via NFS, and run graphical X apps

I did play with this some. It also let you run DOS CLI apps on a *nix box. IIRC, the networking was via Novell networking on the DV-X side, and support for such enabled in the kernel on the *nix side. It might also have been some form of samba. It wasn't true NFS as we know it.

I can comfirm that it did, although if you were also using it as an X-server/X-client, having the networking loaded did take extra memory from multitasking DOS applications.

As I said I did play with it some, mostly to play with the X features, but ultimately dropped back to "plan" DV for the extra memory for DOS.

I was just reading about that the other day when I looked it up again.. I wonder if it derived mostly from *nix code, rather than being something mainly from Quarterdeck.

There was quite a bit of DOS "unix-adjacent" code floating around out
there back in the 1980s I remember seeing an NFS client for DOS and
other X clients that didn't multitask like DV-X...

I ran Files 4 Fun BBS on that setup back in the day .. it was on my 386SX-20 and Windows 3.1

DESQview and QEMM ran Windows better than Windows did itself and allowed me to use the PC even when someone was on the BBS. Ahhh man I miss those days!

Loved QP. It was the first program I recommended for my office. We were using 1-2-3 (of course), but when they saw you could open mutiple sheets and the create 3D sheets, they were sold. I then became the go-to guy when they were looking for new software.

I have some vague memory of maybe Windows 3.x not being very compatible with the 16550 UART chips... that they would work but that the port speeds were limited.

A friend of mine ran a popular board around 1990. He had a 386/25 with
an unheard of 8 mb of RAM and ran 2 nodes under DV. He was still able to
run a local DOS session, although I don't know how much RAM he had left.

I remember being over at his house, chatting with both nodes at the same
time, switching back and forth. He was a *fast* touch typer, his 2
callers not so much. :)
